Marco is teaching the following 3-Day Workshop at Legacies III:
In Search of the Essential
Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Marco Chioini has been practicing calligraphy since 2003 and teaching it as of 2009. He received his principal technique skills from Yannick Durand, from the Scriptorium of Toulouse, who also introduced him to contemporary calligraphy. Thereafter he developed his knowledge alongside world-renowned calligraphers such as Kitty Sabatier, Yves Leterme, Thomas Ingmire, Ewan Clayton, Brody Neuenschwander, Carl Rohrs… Marco was a member of the group Les Calmars, whose research works have been published in the book Dans l’encre du temps, in 2017. Former president of the Société des calligraphes de Montréal, Marco Chioini was also the director of Rendez-vous 2019, the 38th International Calligraphy Conference, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. His fascination is with the letter and the purity of its graphic qualities. His calligraphic exploration is centered upon the deconstruction of the sign. Each stroke becomes a graphic element able to transform itself, instill an emotion or provoke analysis in the viewer. Letters that expand, dance, fade, approach or move away, touch, assert themselves or disappear: breathing and gesture are at the heart of Marco’s research. Visually refined, his work is nonetheless based on a rigorous structural study of historical writings.
