Description

Moto is first and foremost a training hand. Along with ten such hands in my book, Calligraphy as Art and Meditation: A New Approach, it’s designed to educate students in the visual and physical fundamentals of calligraphy. At the heart of my approach is Edward Johnston’s mission statement, “…to give letters life that we ourselves may have more life.” “Living letters”—letters that display movement, energy, rhythm, and feeling—gradually develop through direct experience with these qualities. The physical use of the tool is our entry point: the eye does not hold it! Moto introduces an edged-pen technique through which we explore this unique, sophisticated tool’s capability (and our own!) for creating beautiful and expressive letterform. Through the edged pen, we plunge physically and visually into my meditative, holistic approach: “The 3 Ds”—Design, Ductus, and Dynamics. Design cultivates the eye’s untapped power for analyzing (letter structure, alphabet style) and visualizing (spacing, detail). Ductus, the “map” of numbered arrows adds target points: start, end, mid, and stretch points. These help us infuse ductus with Dynamics: the conscious, sensory experiences that make calligraphy a vitalizing journey. Dynamics’ underlying principle is the application of pressure to a moving tool to generate drag. Consciously participating in the moment-by-moment act of stroke making, tuned into its tactile and kinesthetic feedback, we express our presence through our strokes. In Moto, we delve deeply into an enlivening, intriguing calligraphic process to discover untouched possibilities for creativity and enjoying our art! Prerequisite: “A Meditative Calligraphy Technique” 3-hour Mini-Class.
